The Lion King is 1994 adventure platforming game based on the 1994 animated film of the same name by Walt Disney Animation Studios.
Releases
The Lion King was developed by Westwood Studios and published for the Sega Mega Drive by Virgin Interactive Entertainment Europe in the United Kingdom on November 4, 1994 and in Europe in 1994. It was published for the Mega Drive in Japan by Virgin Interactive Entertainment Japan. It was also published in North America on the North American version of the Mega Drive, the Sega Genesis, by Virgin Interactive Entertainment in 1994.
Westwood Studios also ported it to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or SNES. Virgin Interactive Entertainment Europe published it on November 11, 1994 in Europe. It was published for the Super Famicom, the Japanese version of the SNES, in Japan by Virgin Interactive Entertainment Japan on December 9, 1994. It was published in North America on the SNES by Virgin Interactive Entertainment in 1994. Playtronic Industrial published the SNES version in Brazil in 1994.
The DOS version was ported by East Point Software in 1994. Virgin Interactive Entertainment published it in North America and Virgin Interactive Entertainment Europe published it the United Kingdom as well as Europe.
Westwood Studios also developed an Amiga port, which was published in the United Kingdom by Virgin Interactive Entertainment Europe in 1994.
A Game Boy version was developed by Dark Technologies. It was published in Europe by Virgin Interactive Entertainment Europe in 1994 and in North America by Virgin Interactive in April 1995.
A Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES, version based on the Game Boy version was developed by Dark Technologies and published by Virgin Interactive Entertainment Europe in May 1995. It was the last game officially released on the NES.
In 1997, Disney Interactive Europe published the compilation Disney's Classic Video Games in Europe for Windows. It included three games based on animated films created by Walt Disney Animation Studios, including Aladdin, The Jungle Book, and The Lion King.
Disney Interactive Studios published the DOS version, emulated via DOSBox, for Linux and Windows worldwide on GOG.com on August 4, 2016 and on Linux, macOS, and Windows worldwide on Steam on December 18, 2017.
AtGames published the SNES version in its Legends Flashback dedicated console on October 1, 2018. Sam's Club also distributed a version of the console with ten extra games.
A compilation, Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King, was developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Disney. It included emulated versions of the Japanese and North American versions of the Sega Genesis and Game Boy versions of Aladdin, as well as a prototype version and bug-fixed "Final Cut" version of the North American Sega Genesis version. It also included emulated versions of the Japanese and North American versions of the Sega Genesis, and the North American version of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Gear versions of The Lion King. It was released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows on Steam, and Xbox One worldwide on October 29, 2019.
AtGames also published the SNES version in its updated version of the Legends Flashback dedicated console on October 29, 2019. Like the prior version of the console, Sam's Club also distributed a version of the console with ten extra games.
AtGames published the SNES version in its Adventure Flashback Blast! plug-and-play dongle as well as its Legends Ultimate home arcade cabinet on November 1, 2019.
An updated version of Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King also was developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Disney. Disney Classic Games Collection included the SNES version of Aladdin, and the Genesis and Game Boy versions of The Jungle Book, alongside the games included in Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King. The SNES Aladdin and The Jungle Book games were also released in Disney Classic Games: The Jungle Book and More Aladdin Pack, which was downloadable content, or DLC, for the original compilation. The compilation and DLC were released worldwide for Nintendo Switch on December 3, 2021 and on PlayStation 4 on February 24, 2022. The Windows version of the DLC was released worldwide on Steam on November 23, 2021. The Windows version of the compilation was released on GOG.com worldwide on January 14, 2022.
Disney published the SNES version of The Lion King, which was emulated on Antstream Arcade and distributed by Antstream worldwide on December 5, 2024.
