As a teenager, Takayuki Yagami's father was an attorney who proved that an accused murderer was innocent. The victim took revenge by murdering Yagami's parents.

Orphaned, Yagami is taken in and raised by the yakuza patriarch Mitsugu Matsugane. A lawyer, Ryuzo Genda, a friend of Matsugane, pays for Yagami's law school tuition and hires him to work for his law firm.

Yagami takes on the case of a janitor named Shinpei Okubo. He proves that his client is innocent, however after Okubo is arrested for killing his girlfriend and setting his apartment on fire, Yagami leaves the Genda Law firm and stops practicing as a lawyer.

Yagami becomes a private investigator and opens up the Yagami Detective Agency in Kamurocho. He hires Masaharu Kaito, a former yakuza, as his partner in the agency.
