The original Game Boy had a monochrome, green-tinted screen. It was released in Japan on April 21, 1989, in North America on July 31, 1989, and in Europe on September 28, 1990.

Nintendo's Play It Loud! line of Game Boy consoles contained the same hardware specifications but was sold in different color cases, including transparent.  This line of Game Boy consoles was known as Game Boy Bros. in Japan. They were released on March 20, 1995.

The Game Boy Pocket was a smaller Game Boy unit that required fewer batteries. It was released on July 21, 1996.
 
===Game Boy Light===
The Game Boy Light was only slightly bigger than the Game Boy Pocket and contained a backlit screen. It was released only in Japan on April 14, 1998.
