South Park Digital Studios is a joint venture between South Park Studios and Viacom that was founded in 2007 to license South Park video games and to make digital distribution deals for the show.
South Park is an American adult animated sitcom created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone that began airing in 1997. It spawned from two earlier animated shorts, both titled The Spirit of Christmas. The first short, that pit Jesus against Frosty, was created by Parker and Stone in 1992 after they had met at a film class at the University of California. In 1995, Brian Graden, then a Fox network executive, commissioned Parker and Stone to create a new short. This new short pit Jesus against Santa, and became popular after it became widely distributed. This short was also distributed on the internet, where it became one of the first viral videos.
Parker, Stone, and Graden developed South Park for Comedy Central, based on the Spirit of Christmas shorts. It was a major hit for the network, which led to the development of South Park merchandise, including video games. Parker and Stone initially had no involvement in the design of the games, although they did lend their voices for the characters. They were not happy with the final products, and as a result they set up South Park Digital Studios so that they could assist with the design and story of South Park games.
