The New Nintendo 3DS is a variant of the Nintendo 3DS handheld video game system that has an upgraded processor, increased RAM, an analog C-stick, two additional shoulder triggers, face detection for improving the automatic stereoscopic 3D display, and a built-in near-field communication reader for Amiibo support.
It is backward compatible with most Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo DSi games. Because of its improvements, some games are only compatible with the New Nintendo 3DS. Likewise, some Nintendo 3DS games are enhanced when played with a New Nintendo 3DS. In addition, the 3DS Virtual Console for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System was only available for the New Nintendo 3DS.
The New Nintendo 3DS was succeeded by the Nintendo Switch.
Variants
The New Nintendo 3DS XL (known as the New Nintendo 3DS LL in Japan), like the Nintendo 3DS XL before it, has a 90% larger screen than the original model. The XL model was originally the only model of the New Nintendo 3DS available in North America when it launched on February 13, 2015. However, on September 25, 2015, the standard New Nintendo 3DS was released in North America as well.
Also akin to the original 3DS line, there is a New Nintendo 2DS XL model (known as the New Nintendo 2DS LL in Japan), which contains the same hardware, as the Nintendo 3DS XL, except it doesn't include the automatic stereoscopic 3D display. Unlike the original Nintendo 2DS, the New Nintendo 2DS XL features the same clamshell design as the New Nintendo 3DS XL. It was released in Japan on July 13, 2017, in North America on July 28, 2017 and in Europe on July 28, 2017.
