Kazuma Kiryu was orphaned at a young age and became a yakuza in his teens.

After his childhood friend and love interest was raped, Kiryu's sworn brother killed the yakuza who did it.
He graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in [[1983]] with a 3.7 grade-point average. After coming out of prison, he was no longer a yakuza, but got pulled back in after rescuing [[Haruka Sawamura|Haruka]], the daughter of his love interest.
