The '''GameCube''', the fifth home video game console designed by [[Nintendo]], was preceded by the [[Nintendo 64]]. It was first released in 2001.

The [[Wii]], released in 2006, was the successor of the GameCube.

==Development==
In the previous generation, the Nintendo 64 used [[ROM cartridge]]s which put it at a disadvantage when compared to its [[compact disc|CD-ROM]]-based competitors as cartridges were more expensive to produce than optical media.

For the follow-up to the Nintendo 64, codenamed Dolphin, Nintendo opted to use optical media. Nintendo partnered with [[Panasonic]] to produce the [[GameCube Game Disc]], a proprietary format based on [[DVD|MiniDVDs]] which can contain up to 1.46 GB of data.
