Flash was a multimedia software platform by Adobe. Adobe Animate was originally developed to create multimedia in the Flash format, however Adobe discontinued Flash support on December 31, 2020 in favor of the HTML5 format for web content.
In 1993, FutureWave Software released a vector drawing application named SmartSketch. In 1995, FutureWave added frame-by-frame animation features to the product for use as a vector-based web animation tool and released it as FutureSplash Animator.
In December 1996, Macromedia acquired FutureWave Software and rebranded FutureSplash Animator as Shockwave Flash 1.0.
On December 3, 2005, Adobe acquired Macromedia. Macromedia Flash was rebranded Adobe Flash.
Flash was discontinued by Adobe on December 31, 2020.
