History

The term was originally used for DOS/360, the operating system for System/360 mainframe computers.

It was first released by IBM in June 1966.

Use

MS-DOS was released in 1981.

After this, DOS has become a common shorthand for the MS-DOS operating system and those with which it is compatible.
