APE was a company incorporated in March 1989, after Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi decided to form a new company to support the work of Shigesato Itoi. It was founded to create Mother. Its sequel, Mother 2, was co-developed by HAL Laboratory, which was brought in after the game's development started to falter.

APE disbanded in 1995, and much of the former staff of APE joined a new company named Creatures, also a subsidiary of Nintendo, which was founded on November 8, 1995.
