Mac OS System 6 is the sixth iteration of the Mac OS product line by Apple Computer.

Type

Like its predecessors, Mac OS System 6 was a mouse-controlled operating system.

New features

Virtual memory was added to the operating system which is used in the multitasking MultiFinder extension.

It also adds 32-bit addressing, improved color support, and enhanced printing utilities.

Versions

In 1988, Mac OS System 6.0 was in April, 6.01, 6.02, and 6.03 were released on September 19.

In 1989, 6.0.4 was released on September 20. In 1990, 6.0.5 and 6.0.6 were released on March 19, and 6.0.7 was released on October 15.

On May 13, 1991 6.0.8 was released. Finally, on March 23, 1992, 6.0.8L was released.

Supported CPUs

Versions of Mac OS System 6 were bundled with computers containing Motorola 68020 and 68030 central processing units.

Although computers with 68040 CPUs were not bundled with them, System 6 operating system versions can be used with them.

Successor

Mac OS System 6 was superseded by Mac OS System 7 when the latter was released on May 13, 1991.
