Myst is a third person point-and-click adventure game.
Story
A Stranger becomes stranded on a deserted island after touching an image of the island in a book.
Now the stranger must travel around the island to find out what happened to the inhabitants.
The stranger ultimately wants to find a way off the island and find a way back home.
Releases
Myst was the best selling adventure game upon release, so it is also one of the most ported video games of all time. The original release occurred when the Mac OS version, developed by Cyan in HyperCard, was published by Brøderbund Software in North America on September 24, 1993.
The Windows 3.1 version was developed by Cyan with the Mohawk engine. It was published in North America by Brøderbund Software in March 1994 and was published by Brøderbund Software and distributed by Electronic Arts in Europe in 1994.
A Sega Saturn version was ported by Sunsoft in a custom engine. It was published in Japan by Sunsoft on November 22, 1994, in Europe by Sega on October 6, 1995, and in Brazil by Tec Toy in May 1996.
A Windows 95 release of the Mohawk version was developed by Cyan and published by Mindscape in North America in 1995.
A PlayStation version was ported by AlfaSystem in a custom engine and published by Softbank in Japan on January 27, 1995. This version was localized by Visual Sciences and published by Psygnosis in Europe in 1996.
A 3DO version, ported by Micro Cabin in a custom engine, was published by Panasonic Software and distributed by Matsushita Electric of America in North America in 1995.
A Jaguar CD version was ported by Atari Corporation in a custom engine and published by Atari Corporation and Sunsoft in North America in 1995.
A CD-i version was ported by Ledge Multimedia in a custom engine and published by Philips Interactive Media in North America in 1996.
An Amiga version was ported by ClickBOOM Interactive in a custom engine and published by PXL computers in North America in 1997.
A Windows Mobile version was ported by Mean Hamster Software in a custom engine and published by the same company in North America on March 2, 2005.
An iOS version was ported by Cyan Worlds, the then-current name of Cyan, in a custom engine and published by the same company on May 3, 2009.
The PlayStation version was published by Sunsoft through emulation as a PSOne Classic on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable on February 8, 2012, followed by a release on PlayStation Vita on August 28, 2012.
The Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 versions of Myst are supported by ScummVM, a program designed to let adventure and role=playing video games run on multiple platforms.
Remakes
An updated version was released in 1999, titled Myst: Masterpiece Edition. It was further remade in full 3D as Real Myst in 2000. It was followed by a handheld remake simply titled Myst in 2006. It was further enhanced into realMyst: Masterpiece Edition in 2014. A high-definition full-3D remake, also simply titled Myst, was released in 2020.
